Where Most Painters Get It Wrong

Paint Over Smoke Damage Without the Right Primer and It Bleeds Back Through Within Months.

Smoke residue is oil-based and penetrates deep into walls and ceilings. Apply standard paint over it — even three coats — and the brown staining returns. The fix is stain-blocking primer, applied correctly, before colour goes on. Skip it and the repair fails regardless of how much paint you use.

Water damage has the same problem: paint over a wall that hasn't fully dried, or that has mould developing behind the surface, and you're painting over a ticking clock. The wall has to be fully dry and any mould treated before we touch a brush. We hold SA Building License BLD 328101, carry full public liability insurance, and provide documentation in the exact format Adelaide insurers and loss adjusters require.

What We Handle

Insurance Repair Services

Fire, smoke, water, storm, and accidental damage across Adelaide. The full scope — substrate treatment and all.

Fire & Smoke Damage

The visible char is the easy part. Smoke residue penetrates walls, ceilings, and cornice — if you don't treat it with a stain-blocking primer like Zinsser BIN before painting, the brown staining bleeds back through within months. We identify every affected surface, treat the substrate correctly, then restore to pre-loss colour. Most general painters skip this step and wonder why it comes back.

Water & Flood Damage

Wet walls need to be fully dry before any primer or paint goes on — paint over residual moisture and you're trapping it in, which leads to bubbling, mould, and failure within weeks. We check for mould forming behind the surface, and coordinate with drying specialists if needed before our scope begins. Then we prime with mould-resistant products and restore.

Storm & Hail Damage

Hail, wind-driven debris, and falling branches damage weatherboards, render, eaves, and painted surfaces. We repair the physical damage — filling, sanding, and re-rendering where needed — then refinish with the closest possible colour match to your existing exterior. Documentation provided for the insurer at every stage.

Accidental & General Damage

Impact damage, door handle holes, scuffs from moves or renovations — anything that's broken the painted surface and needs an invisible repair. We patch, prime, feather the edges, and blend the colour match so the repair disappears. This is harder than it sounds on older painted surfaces, and we'll be honest about achievable results before we start.

Our Process

How We Work

Six steps. Documentation at every stage. This is how every insurance repair job runs.

01

On-Site Assessment

We inspect every affected surface — not just the visible damage, but adjacent areas that may have absorbed smoke or moisture without obvious signs. Insurance repairs fail when the scope misses something.

02

Detailed Scope of Works

A written scope with itemised line items per surface and treatment type — formatted for loss adjusters and insurers. This is the document that moves your claim forward. We've been writing these for over 15 years and know exactly what assessors need.

03

Substrate Treatment

Stain-blocking primers for smoke and fire damage. Mould treatment for water damage, once the walls are dry. This step is what separates a repair that lasts from one that fails within months — and it's what most painters skip.

04

Colour Matching

We match existing paint colours as closely as the surface allows. On older or faded surfaces we'll be straight with you about how close we can get — no surprises after the fact.

05

Painting & Restoration

Surfaces restored to pre-loss condition. Edges feathered and blended so repairs don't read as patches. The standard is: you shouldn't be able to tell where the damage was.

06

Before & After Documentation

Photos taken at assessment and on completion, provided for your claim file. We can liaise directly with your assessor or loss adjuster throughout if that moves things along faster for you.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Fire and smoke, water and flood, storm and hail, and general accidental damage. The tricky ones are fire and water — both require proper substrate treatment before any paint goes on, or the damage comes back through the surface within months. If it's a painted surface that needs restoring, we can scope it.
We aim to be on site within 24–48 hours of your enquiry. Insurance jobs are often prioritised given the disruption — living around damage isn't something we drag our feet on. Call Brodie directly on 0401 976 328 if you need someone out fast.
A detailed written scope of works with itemised line items for each affected surface, before photos taken on the day we assess, and after photos on completion. Most Adelaide insurers and loss adjusters require this exact format — we've been doing it long enough to know what they need to see.
In most cases yes. On older homes where the paint has faded or changed tone over the years, we get as close as possible and will be straight with you about expectations before we start. A seamless blend on a 15-year-old wall isn't always achievable — we'll tell you that before we quote, not after.
No. We quote first, you submit the scope to your insurer, and the claim can be assessed with our documentation in hand. This is almost always the faster path — waiting for approval before even getting a quote adds weeks for no reason. Get us out, get the scope, then submit.
