Painting Services in Marion, Adelaide

Marion was laid out as a village by William Light and B. T. Finniss in 1838, and for a long time it grew vegetables, stone fruit, almonds and grapes. That changed after the Second World War. The City of Marion records that its population grew from more than 10,500 in the late 1940s to over 66,000 by the mid 1960s, and the South Australian Housing Trust bought horticultural land to build housing estates. Many of those homes still stand, now alongside newer infill housing. Painting them well comes down to two things: knowing what older materials need, and preparing each surface the way it needs.

We paint Marion homes inside and out, from a single room to a full exterior. Every job starts with an in-person quote, and you get a fixed price in writing.

Marion Homes and What They Need

01

Rendered fronts and porticos

Render cracks get filled and loose paint comes off before the new coats.

Rendered homes, with their columns, porticos and garage fronts, need different prep to brick. Dulux's advice is to wash walls down with water and a stiff brush to remove loose material before repainting. Cracks in the render are then filled and sanded, and flaking paint is scraped back, so the new coats go onto a sound surface.

02

Smoke and fire damage

Smoke stains get sealed with a stain-blocking primer, or they bleed back through.

Smoke residue soaks into walls, ceilings and cornices, and ordinary paint over it lets the brown staining come back through. Affected surfaces are cleaned and sealed with a stain-blocking primer before the colour goes on. For insurance claims, we provide a written scope of works with before and after photos for your insurer or assessor.

03

Holes, dents and patch repairs

Patches are sanded flush and primed, so they don't show through.

Busy family homes collect dents, door-handle holes and cracks. Each one is filled or patched, sanded flush with the wall and primed before painting, so the repair disappears under the new paint instead of showing as a patch.

04

Post-war brick homes

Trims, eaves and frames get the work. Think twice before painting face brick.

Many homes from Marion's post-war boom were basic three- and four-bedroom houses with walls of double brick, or brick and Mount Gambier stone, and tiled roofs, and the first owners often finished the painting themselves. On these homes the painting is mostly the timber and trims: eaves, fascias, gutters, window frames and doors. If your brick has never been painted, think it through first, because paint is very hard to get off brick once it's on.

05

Asbestos and lead in older homes

Built before 1990? Some materials may contain asbestos, so prep has to be gentle.

SafeWork SA warns that asbestos is common in homes built before 1990, not just in roofs, and that asbestos cement sheeting can only be prepared for painting with non-abrasive methods, such as cleaning solutions washed off with low-pressure water. SA Health also advises assuming homes built before the mid-1970s have lead in their older paint layers. If your home is that age, ask us how we'll prepare it.

FAQs

Marion Painting FAQs

It can be painted, but it can't be sanded or high-pressure cleaned. SafeWork SA says asbestos cement sheeting can only be prepared with non-abrasive methods, such as cleaning solutions washed off with low-pressure water. If your home was built before 1990, treat sheeting as possibly containing asbestos unless it has been tested.
Only in some cases. Under South Australia's planning rules, external painting of a Local Heritage Place that could affect its heritage value counts as development and needs approval. Internal painting doesn't. If you're not sure whether your home is listed, call the City of Marion on 08 8375 6600.
Yes. We quote first and give you a written scope of works with itemised surfaces and before photos, so you can submit it with your claim. We can also liaise with your assessor if that helps.
It's your call, but think it through. Paint is very hard to get off brick once it's on, and painted brick needs repainting from then on. On most post-war homes, the eaves, trims and frames are where a repaint makes the biggest difference.
A typical 3–4 bedroom interior takes 3–5 working days, and a single-storey exterior about the same. Homes with a lot of patching or damage repairs take longer. You get a specific day count in your written quote.
