Painting Services in Norwood, Adelaide

Norwood is one of Adelaide's oldest suburbs, and its streets show it: stone-fronted villas and cottages, Edwardian homes with timber verandahs, and character houses with modern extensions out the back. Painting them well comes down to two things. Knowing what should and shouldn't be painted, and preparing old surfaces properly before any paint goes on.

We paint Norwood homes inside and out, from a single room to a full exterior, plus shopfronts and offices along The Parade. Every job starts with an in-person quote, and you get a fixed price in writing.

What We Offer in Norwood

Norwood Homes and What They Need

01

Stone fronts: what to leave alone

Unpainted stone stays natural. We paint everything around it.

Many Norwood homes have bluestone or sandstone fronts with brick or rendered trims. Original stone that has never been painted is usually best left that way. Paint is very hard to get off stone once it's on, and on a heritage-listed home it may need council approval. What we paint is everything around it: window frames, doors, verandahs, fascias, gutters, and rendered or previously painted walls.

02

Verandahs, lacework and sash windows

Scrape, fill and prime first, or the new paint fails in the same spots.

Timber verandahs, fretwork, cast-iron lace and double-hung sash windows take the most time on a character home. Flaking paint gets scraped back, gaps are filled and bare timber is primed before the topcoats go on. Skip that and the new paint fails at the same weak spots as the old.

03

High ceilings, cornices and old plaster

Plaster cracks get repaired and primed, not painted over.

Inside, villas often have high ceilings, decorative cornices, ceiling roses and old plaster walls. Old plaster cracks and moves differently to modern plasterboard, so cracks get repaired and primed before we paint, not just painted over.

04

Salt damp on lower walls

Deal with salt damp first, or new paint will fail again.

Paint bubbling or flaking along the bottom of a stone wall is often salt damp, which is common in older Adelaide homes. New paint over salt damp will fail again. If we spot it at the quote, we'll point it out so it can be dealt with before painting.

05

Lead in older paint

Built before the mid-1970s? Assume there's lead in the old paint.

SA Health advises assuming any house built before the mid-1970s has lead-based paint in its older layers. Sanding or scraping it releases toxic dust, so it has to be handled carefully. If your home is that age, ask us how we'll manage it on your job.

FAQs

Norwood Painting FAQs

Possibly. Parts of Norwood are State or Local Heritage Places, or sit in a Historic Area Overlay. Under South Australia's planning rules, external painting of a Local Heritage Place that could affect its heritage value counts as development and needs approval. Internal painting doesn't. If you're unsure, call the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters planning team on 08 8366 4530 before you choose colours.
If the stone has never been painted, we'll usually advise leaving it natural. Paint is very hard to remove from stone, and on a heritage home it may need approval. We'll paint the trims, windows, verandah and any surfaces that are already painted.
A typical 3–4 bedroom interior takes 3–5 working days, and a single-storey exterior about the same. Character homes with a lot of timber detail, lacework or high ceilings can take longer. You get a specific day count in your written quote.
Yes. We schedule commercial jobs around your trading hours and can work in stages to keep disruption to a minimum.
Yes. We offer colour consultation and can suggest period-appropriate palettes for villas and cottages. If your home is heritage listed, check with council before settling on exterior colours.
