Painting Services in North Adelaide, Adelaide
North Adelaide was laid out in 1837 as part of Colonel William Light's plan for the city. The City of Adelaide's historic area statement for the Finniss area describes its growth as a residential village from the 1830s to the 1940s: small early cottages of limestone and bluestone rubble, a boom of solid Victorian houses from the 1870s to the 1890s, then Edwardian homes and inter-war bungalows. Painting them well comes down to two things: respecting the original detail, and preparing old timber and render properly before any paint goes on.
We paint North Adelaide homes inside and out, from a single room to a full exterior. Every job starts with an in-person quote, and you get a fixed price in writing.

North Adelaide Homes and What They Need
Panelled doors, fanlights and sidelights
Old joinery gets scraped, filled and primed, one panel at a time.
According to the council's historic area statement, Victorian houses here typically have timber-framed windows and four-panelled doors with fanlights and often sidelights, and Edwardian doors were often divided into three or four horizontal panels. Every panel, bead and glazing bar is scraped back where it's flaking, filled and primed before the topcoats go on.
Verandahs, cast iron and render dressings
Ornate detail gets prepared by hand before it's painted.
The same statement describes Victorian verandahs on cast iron or timber posts with moulded capitals, cast iron brackets and frieze decoration, and window and door surrounds picked out in moulded render or brick dressings. Edwardian homes added strapped gables. All of that detail is prepared by hand: loose paint scraped and brushed off, rust treated on the iron, and cracks in render filled before painting.
The Heritage Incentives Scheme
Heritage home in the city? Ask council about funding before work starts.
The City of Adelaide's Heritage Incentives Scheme reimburses owners of heritage places, and unlisted historic character places that meet its criteria, for part of the cost of professional advice and conservation work. An allocation is made once both the scheme's approval and any development approval are in place, so check with council before the work starts.
Lead in older paint
Home built before the mid-1970s? Treat the old layers as lead paint.
SA Health advises assuming houses built before the mid-1970s have lead-based paint in their older layers. North Adelaide's Victorian, Edwardian and inter-war homes all predate that. Sanding or scraping it releases toxic dust, so it needs careful handling. Ask us how we'll manage it on your job.
